As soon as President Donald Trump announced Brett Kavanaugh as his Supreme Court nominee, anti-gunners were quick to lose their marbles.
We know Trump's nominee scares the Left when Everytown for Gun Safety sent out this email to supporters:
Moms Demand Action Founder Shannon Watts went on a tangent about how Kavanaugh is "extreme" and "dangerous," especially when it comes to his interpretation of the Second Amendment:
Judge Kavanaugh has applied an extreme and dangerous interpretation of the Second Amendment when determining whether a law is constitutional, one that does not take into account a law’s impact on public safety. https://t.co/xCEKwUQT7m— Shannon Watts (@shannonrwatts) July 10, 2018
Gee, what a shocker! A judge who actually looks at the text of the Constitution, and not just how he or she feels on a subject matter.
We call that being a responsible member of the judiciary. It's much better than being a judicial activist.
Judge Kavanaugh has made clear he would strike down prohibitions on the AR-15 and other assault-style weapons. In 2011, he dissented from a decision upholding Washington, D.C.’s prohibition on assault-style weapons and its requirement to register handguns.— Shannon Watts (@shannonrwatts) July 10, 2018
Oh, Shannon. Haven't you learned by now that what you consider an "assault weapon" is in your imagination?
The dissent put Kavanaugh at odds not only with the two other Republican-appointed judges on the court hearing the case, but also every other federal and state appeals court to address the issue.— Shannon Watts (@shannonrwatts) July 10, 2018
Doesn't this just prove that he goes with the Constitution and not the whims of a political party?
That. Is. A. Good. Thing.
President Trump vowed he’d never let the @NRA down, and with the Kavanaugh pick, he chose someone whose judicial record demonstrates a dangerous view of the Second Amendment that elevates gun rights over public safety. The Senate should vote down this nomination.#ScotusPick— Shannon Watts (@shannonrwatts) July 10, 2018
Translation: OMG! Kavanaugh believes in allowing people to arm themselves for self-defense! RUNNNN! HIDE! He's...dangerous!
Of course, Moms Demand Action immediately tweeted encouraging gun control advocates to get in contact with their senators to urge them to oppose Kavanaugh.
Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s extreme outlier approach to the Second Amendment would put in jeopardy the full range of gun safety laws. Tell your senators to OPPOSE this Supreme Court nominee: https://t.co/TyQc6vJN78 #ScotusPick pic.twitter.com/upd8VD4jpR— Moms Demand Action (@MomsDemand) July 10, 2018
Everytown had similar messaging:
By nominating Judge Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, President Trump makes good on his promise to never let the NRA down.— Everytown (@Everytown) July 10, 2018
Needless to say, we oppose this nomination. Please urge your senators to vote NO on this nominee: https://t.co/CmYUdljsb1 #scotuspick pic.twitter.com/AQBTNGBUv3
Everytown seems to forget one thing: there are millions of law-abiding gun owners across the nation. Trump is keeping good on his promise to us.
Former Democratic aide Brian Fallon attempted to paint Kavanaugh in a negative light:
Kavanaugh:— Brian Fallon (@brianefallon) July 10, 2018
?? Praised *dissent* in Roe
?? Criticized Roberts ruling on Obamacare
?? Says sitting POTUS can't be indicted/can fire special counsel whenever he wants
?? Opposes net neutrality
?? Opposes consumer bureau
?? Says assault weapon bans are unconstitutional
What he probably didn't expect, was NRA Spokeswoman Dana Loesch to spin his take into a positive.
He sounds even more amazing when you put it this way. https://t.co/fdj3pZOfYA— Dana Loesch (@DLoesch) July 10, 2018
And, of course, Chris Murphy had to throw his two cents in about how horribly scary Kavanaugh must be for supporting the Second Amendment:
Brett Kavanaugh is a true Second Amendment radical. He believes assault weapon bans are unconstitutional, a position way out of the judicial mainstream, far to the right of even late Justice Scalia.— Chris Murphy (@ChrisMurphyCT) July 10, 2018
Loesch's four word response is epic (and hilarious)!
Make this an ad. https://t.co/ONU5cwY5lI— Dana Loesch (@DLoesch) July 10, 2018
But, she also points out a couple things Murphy seemed to forget:
And also no, he wasn’t “to the right of even late Justice Scalia,” whom anti-gun advocates loathed until it became convenient to celebrate him posthumously.— Dana Loesch (@DLoesch) July 10, 2018
DING! DING! DING! We have a winner!
What Second Amendment Groups Are Saying
Second Amendment Foundation Founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb:
We’re encouraged by this nomination because by adding Judge Kavanaugh, we might see the high court become more willing to accept and rule on important Second Amendment issues, such as right-to-carry.
While the Supreme Court has twice affirmed in the last ten years that the Second Amendment protects a fundamental, individual right to keep a firearm for home defense but the court has yet to even begin defining the right to bear arms outside of the home or business, in public.
We know that the Court will face enormous challenges on other rights issues but the right to keep and bear arms is a cornerstone of the Bill of Rights that has set this nation apart as a beacon of freedom and liberty. It is time for the court to examine the constitutionality of various state laws that restrict the right to carry, for example, and make arbitrary decisions about who can exercise that right.
Our courts should be the place that we can trust to safeguard our rights and promote freedom.
We’re hoping that the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh to the court will be quickly affirmed by the Senate.
Chris W. Cox, Executive Director, NRA-ILA:
President Trump has made another outstanding choice in nominating Brett Kavanaugh for the U.S. Supreme Court. He has an impressive record that demonstrates his strong support for the Second Amendment. We urge the Senate to swiftly confirm Judge Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court, just as it confirmed him to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
During his tenure on the U.S. Court of Appeals, Kavanaugh wrote a strong dissenting opinion in opposition to Washington, D.C.’s ban on commonly owned semi-automatic firearms and registration requirement by applying an historical test consistent with Justice Scalia’s opinion in Heller.
Judge Kavanaugh has demonstrated his clear belief that the Constitution should be applied as the Framers intended. To that end, he has supported the fundamental, individual right to self-defense embraced by Justice Scalia in the historic Heller decision.
On behalf of our six million members, the NRA strongly supports Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court. We will be activating our members and tens of millions of supporters throughout the country in support of Judge Kavanaugh. He will protect our right to keep and bear arms and is an outstanding choice to fill Justice Kennedy’s seat.
Lawrence Keane, National Shooting Sports Foundation Senior Vice President and General Counsel:
We are pleased to lend our support to President Trump's nomination of Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court and urge the Senate to approve his nomination before the next term begins on the first Monday in October. We are confident that Judge Kavanaugh will serve our nation with distinction as an Associate Justice of our nation's highest court and that he will make decisions that will serve to protect the Second Amendment and other Constitutionally guaranteed rights of law-abiding Americans.
What's your take on Judge Brett Kavanaugh? Is he who you'd like to see on the Supreme Court?
